O.G. Bloor taco goods

My bud Mike was downtown from sauga for an interview, so we hit up the most authentic taco strip in Toronto: Bloor Street West (but not too west). Home to a whole lot of bums, dollar stores, garbage piles, and the best taco shops in the city.

One of the oldest and most talked about is Mexitaco, just west of Christie Pits.
Mexitaco lays low like most of the good taco spots, and keeps it super simple on the inside. They do have a sidewalk patio which is always good for our 2 weeks of summer, but the inside is pretty damn boring. In contrast, El Asador down the street is able to house like 3 dinky tables and still make it a nice place to hangout and eat a buttload of tacos.

On to the grubadub! Mexitacos got some sweet taco deals, offering 4 tacos for 6.99, and you can mix n match. I went with a couple of porks and a couple of steaks. Each combo gets different toppings like pickled radish, pico, cilantro and peppers. They’ve also got a whole lot of other stuff on the menu, all with pictures to proove it.

Hot Date: Dos Amigos

Friday, time for a night out on the town, taco style.
I took the girly to Dos Amigos since its got a very comfy and intimate feel to the inside. Its got a sweetass backyard patio by the way, definitely worth a check in the summer.

Their menus pretty extensive, with a lot of pricier choices like Mariscada and Pescado Asado, and of course good ‘ole taco platters. They’ve got a Tequila list that will mess you up good too. I started off with some Cafe de Olla which is like a spicy black coffee, served up in a nice mug with a cinnamon stick. I’m glad I had something to sip on because the service was pretty damn slow that night. The girly was starting to get restless, but thats why I like her.

Johny Banana’s Taco Trio

Took a trip to Johny Banana during my lunch break Friday with my hungry Korean pal John. I had low hopes for Johny Banana, considering  all the dudes in tight jeans passing me by on Queen Street. However, just across the street is the local homeless hangout, filled with bums, crazies, and german sheppard mutts. Now I only mention this because homeless are usually a good sign of tasty tacos. Turns out Johny Taco is more authentic than I thought.

Schredded Chicken Tacos Recipe

Stolen from Savour Fare

This recipe looked good because you can just use leftover chicken. No need to roast pork for hours like a sucker. But thats good too.

  • 6 tomatillos, husked and washed (tomatillos look like small green tomatoes encased in a paper husk. They’re not spicy at all and quite sour)
  • 1 jalapeno pepper
  • Olive oil
  • 1/2 small onion, coarsely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, coarsely chopped
  • 1 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cooked chicken (You can make this with store bought rotisserie chicken or leftover cooked chicken, but if you don’t have any lying around, you can poach chicken breasts in chicken broth for about 15 minutes)
  • 8 corn tortillas
  • 1 cup crumbled cotija cheese (Cotija is a dryish Mexican cheese – you can substitute feta, which is saltier and sharper)
  • cilantro to garnish
  • Crema or sour cream to garnish

Point of reference

What a real burrito should look like.

Straight from the Mexican Fiesa stand in downtown San Diego on India St. Notice how it doesnt look like a soggy diaper full of beans and rice. Fresh limes, pico, jalapenos, cabbage, and fish taco sauce. Avoid during lunch hours.

Burrito Boyz in the Hood

Decided to pay Burrito Boyz a visit on my way to the ACC. Leafs pre-season tix, thanks seester! Stomachs were growling as we entered the underground famed burrito emporium on Adelaide, crowded with people waiting on their orders.

I got the chicken burrito, my bud Jay got the beef. I was happy to see them show some fish burrito love with both haddock and halibut choices on the menu. Deep fried of course, but too pricey for stink fish. Other fillings you could get were shrimp, some soy junk, veggie, the usual.

Thats why I’m starting this blog, to chronicle all the good and bad tacos, burritos, quesadillas, pupusas, enchiladas and more that Toronto has to offer. And if I eat some Mexican outside of TO, then thats ok too. And maybe Ill put up some photos of my dog too.
