Johny Banana’s Taco Trio

Took a trip to Johny Banana during my lunch break Friday with my hungry Korean pal John. I had low hopes for Johny Banana, considering all the dudes in tight jeans passing me by on Queen Street. However, just across the street is the local homeless hangout, filled with bums, crazies, and german sheppard mutts. Now I only mention this because homeless are usually a good sign of tasty tacos. Turns out Johny Taco is more authentic than I thought.

Steak, Pork, Chorizo
First thing that jumped out at me was the 3 taco deal on their menu for $7.59. A bit more expensive than usual, but this is still Queen Street. I went with a steak, chorizo, and pork trio. For my 3 little tacos, I was offered lettuce and tomato and onion (instead of pico) and a good choice of sauces. The medium green tomatillo salsa was actually giving me the sweats after the first taco. Guac and cheese is extra, which sucks balls, but they have a sweet avocado-lime sauce instead. I’m always down to welcome lime into my tacos, and this sauce was no exception.
Out of the 3 tacos, the salty pork owned hands down, as the dog food steak was tough and the chorizo got mixed with potatoes. The Chorizo was alright and all, but whats with the potato filler?? Cut that out.

Cubes of potato cramp my chorizo’s style
The corn tortillas were definitely not home made, but still tasted pretty good. There’s no hard shell substitute, which was a bummer because these soft shells were falling apart by my third taco. My hands had that corn and cilantro smell for the rest of the day, which is alright with me.
Johny Banana turned out to be pretty authentic for a downtown taco joint south of Bloor. They at least looked the part, too bad the meats were all stank. Their rating would be higher if it wasnt for the crappy meats. Just stick to the pork, and maybe some Alfajores for dessert and your gut will thank you.
