O.G. Bloor taco goods

My bud Mike was downtown from sauga for an interview, so we hit up the most authentic taco strip in Toronto: Bloor Street West (but not too west). Home to a whole lot of bums, dollar stores, garbage piles, and the best taco shops in the city.

One of the oldest and most talked about is Mexitaco, just west of Christie Pits.
Mexitaco lays low like most of the good taco spots, and keeps it super simple on the inside. They do have a sidewalk patio which is always good for our 2 weeks of summer, but the inside is pretty damn boring. In contrast, El Asador down the street is able to house like 3 dinky tables and still make it a nice place to hangout and eat a buttload of tacos.

On to the grubadub! Mexitacos got some sweet taco deals, offering 4 tacos for 6.99, and you can mix n match. I went with a couple of porks and a couple of steaks. Each combo gets different toppings like pickled radish, pico, cilantro and peppers. They’ve also got a whole lot of other stuff on the menu, all with pictures to proove it.

Mexitaco starts off right with the salsa and fixins. A few bowls of limes, red and green salsas, and onions come to the table. The salsas are very nice, not too strong, and not wattered down to a tomato puddle. The taco platters come quick after with a slurry of tiny corn tortillas, meat, onion and cilantro. Thats the key to a good taco. Making it as tasty as possible with minimal effort. If you can easily identify all the ingredients in under 5 seconds then youre off to a good start.

The pork and steak both impressed. Like all good tacos pastor, they were marinated with pineapple with a few chunks kept in there for good measure. I actually preferred the shredded steak because it was way more tender than the pork, but they were both great tacos. Bonus fact: Mexitaco serves up sheep tacos on the weekend! TGIS!

The tacos were tiny, so we ordered some of their home made guacamole and chips. I was a bit disappointed with their guac since it was 8 bucks and all we got was a tiny bowl of it with some oily chips. Colour was a bit pale, like mint ice cream, and the texture was creepy to swallow. Should have jumped on the nachos or stuffed jalapenos instead. If it was summer, it would have been a no brainer with the Acapulco ice cream.

Needs more red

Mexitaco comes with the authentic goods and selection, but theyre missing the atmosphere. You dont need waitresses in a place like that. The menu should wallpaper the ugly coloured walls, and be bordered by half broken year-round christmas lights.

All in all, Mexitaco lived up to its ghetto taco fame. They serve up their tacos exactly how tacos should be served, keepin it understated but potent, like Steve Kerr. Couple that with some cold Sidrals out on their patio and youve got it made.
