Groceries at La Tortilleria

Me, Jay, and his sister went down to the nitty gritty to buy some goat leather and grab some grub. It was a family affair, so it was fitting that I take em to La Tortilleria on Dufferin.

If you ever need to do some Mexicano grocery shopping or buy some ridiculous peñatas OR grab some cheap authentic tacos, then La Tortilleria will take care of you. Just dont come here on the coldest day of the year like we did, because they’re lacking any kind of heat in there. Its 95% grocery store, but that other 5% is some sweet ass tacos. Youve got 2 tables in the back of the store to do your business, or just take em to go.

Considering this is as ghetto as it gets when it comes to tacos in Toronto, La Tortilleria’s menu is limited to pretty much… tacos. But theres a good 7 varieties to choose from, and theyre dirt cheap at $6.85 for 3 and $8.50 for 4. Since the place is a grocery store, they also stock the cheapest drinks in town, so we grabbed some made in mexico Coke bottles and watermelon Juaritos, dollar fifty each.

The tacos come out on plastic frisbees, decked in refried beans, rice, and your meat filling. Was hoping to get some kind of salsa happening on my tacos, but the monster meat portions made up for it. La Tortilleria makes their own corn tortillas in house and sells em too along with their own nachos, salsas, detergent, cereal, toothpaste, etc…

First up is the squash taco, with bits of corn and cactus in there. It tasted healthy, but the good kind of healthy.

Next was the Mole Poblano taco. Im not a huge fan of Mole, but i jump on it the odd time its served. Its like the egg nog of mexican sauces. Its spanish for chocolate taco that will haunt you later before you try to have a restful sleep. That thick brown sauce is literally spices, nuts, chipotle peppers and friggin chocolate over pork butt. It makes you feel like you just ate a turd bomb waiting to go off in your stomach. Still good though!

Finally, the pork taco. Cant go wrong with pork tacos. This tasted great, lots of sauce, extra moist, and definitely one of the meatier pork tacos in town. La Tortilleria definitely hooks up the decent portions, so 3 tacos is more than enough to cover you for dinner.

Even though I froze my sack off eating in there, La Tortilleria still impressed me. Service was friendly, prices are dirt cheap, and the tacos fill me up like one of their peñatas. Definitely more of a take-out spot, but fortunately you can pick up some groceries to bring back home and really impress the ladies. Boom I just gave you a great ideer for new years.
