2009: Year of the Taco
Im supposed to go suit shopping for my sisters wedding today. But I had a better idea that didnt envolve old men yanking at my delicate loins.
My top 5 tacos of 2009
This list is solely based on the taco itself. Pretty much if i could snap my fingers and have a half dozen tacos fall onto my pajamas right now, they would be:
#5 Tacos El Asador

El Asador is probably the most popular spot on Bloor for tacos. The bigass piece of pineapple in the al pastor pork taco gives me flash backs of good times with pals from uni eating there. Comes served on doubled-up tortillas.
#4 La Tortilleria

I genuinely think they raise their own cattle in the back of their store because each taco here is loaded with a pig and a half at least. The Mole was a bit overwhelming, but the pork and veggie squash ones stole the show. Throw in some refried beans and rice, and these things will keep you busy on the porcelain for hours to come. Cheap too!
#3 Dos Amigos

For a fancy joint, Dos Amigos comes with the quality. Their tacos are pocket sized, but you can tell they’re what the prime minister eats on mexican night. The pork was super moist, and the veggie taco was actually pretty damn good. Bare-bones tacos at their best.
#2 La Taquiza

Probably my favourite home made tortillas on the list. Theyre so fluffy and moist, you could wrap a dead skunk in these and i’d still chow down. The Al Pastor tacos were oozing with pineapple juice, and get some heat packed into them with their selection of salsas.
#1 Mexitaco

When a shack looks as ugly as Mexitaco does, you know the foods going to make up for it. The tacos come out open-faced in quatros, smothered in cilantro and ready to be dressed with salsa, jalapenos, limes and onions. The meat is super tender, and theres just so much flavour packed into these little nuggets of joy. Mexitaco wasnt one of my favouritest places of the year, but their taco stains on my shirt that day always make me smile.
